Luxury Vinyl Plank vs. Laminate: What Actually Holds Up at Home

Luxury vinyl plank and laminate are the two most common ways to get a wood look without the cost and upkeep of real hardwood. They look similar in a showroom, but they behave differently in a home.

Water is the big difference

Rigid-core luxury vinyl plank is waterproof, which makes it a natural fit for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and finished basements. Laminate has a fiberboard core that can swell if water sits on it, so it belongs in dry living areas, bedrooms, and offices. See our luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring pages for details.

Wear, scratches, and pets

Laminate has a hard surface that resists scratches well. LVP is softer underfoot and quieter, and a thick wear layer holds up to pets and furniture. For a household with large dogs and a muddy entry, we usually lean toward LVP for its forgiveness around moisture.

How they feel and sound

Vinyl tends to feel warmer and quieter than laminate. Laminate can sound more hollow without a good underlayment. Either way, installation quality matters: a flat subfloor is the secret to a floor that does not click, flex, or separate. If your existing floor needs work first, our floor demolition and prep service handles removal and leveling.

Cost and value

Laminate is often the more budget-friendly choice, while LVP costs more for its waterproof performance. The real cost depends on product thickness, wear layer, and prep. We quote in writing after measuring, and financing is available once you receive your estimate.
