How to Prepare Your Home for a Flooring Installation

A smooth flooring installation starts before the crew arrives. A little preparation keeps the job on schedule and the day less stressful for everyone.

Before install day

Confirm your product selections and schedule in writing. Talk with your installer about whether furniture moving is included, and clear anything fragile, breakable, or sentimental from the work area. Remove wall decor near the work area and take down curtains that touch the floor. If you are in a condo or townhome, check for building rules on work hours and elevator reservations.

Think about the subfloor

What is under your old floor decides how your new one performs. Uneven or damaged subfloors need leveling or repair first, and old adhesive or staples may need to be removed. Our floor demolition and prep team handles that work, and our floor repair service fixes damaged sections.

Pets, kids, and daily life

Plan a safe space for pets, since open doors and fresh adhesives are a bad mix. Expect noise, dust, and some odors during certain installs. For hardwood refinishing, you may need to stay off floors for a period while finishes cure; read more on our hardwood refinishing page.

After the install

Do a walkthrough with your installer, ask for care instructions, and keep any leftover material for future repairs. Reach out right away if anything looks off. If you are planning a larger project, ask about flooring installation packages that include removal, prep, and trim.
